Two New York City playwrights are on the verge of a world premiere of their new musical that includes Prince Edward Island’s favorite fictional character.

Anne of Green Gables – A New Folk Rock Musical will open at Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival in Auburn, N.Y., on July 5.

Co-creator Matte O’Brien has by no means been to P.E.I. or seen Anne of Green Gables: The Musicaland even seen the brand new Netflix collection.

But O’Brien grew up studying the Anne books, and he and his writing accomplice Matt Vinson needed to actually give attention to what Montgomery wrote.

“We wanted to make sure we were working off the original source material and not other interpretations,” mentioned O’Brien.

“But that’s what’s amazing about the material. It’s exciting that it’s inspired different writers to do different things and take different angles on it.”

Intimate and bigger than life

O’Brien mentioned discovering the proper method for the musical was a wrestle at first. It took near a 12 months to search out the proper method.

Finally, they struck on the concept of bringing Anne’s bigger imaginings to the stage alongside the presentation of the tight-knit group of Avonlea.

“Anne starts to conjure, for lack of a better word, her imagination, which she’s famous for, and then we see that come to life on the stage,” mentioned O’Brien.

O’Brien is attempting to not get too far forward of himself when it comes to the way forward for the musical. His agent is speaking a couple of present in New York and someplace in Canada after the Finger Lakes run.
