Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says he fired the corporate’s prime spokesman over use of the N-word.

The spokesman, Jonathan Friedland, confirmed in tweets that he was leaving the corporate, saying he was insensitive in talking along with his staff about phrases that offend in comedy.

In a memo to staff, revealed by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter and confirmed by Netflix, Hastings says Friedland used the phrase twice – first in a gathering of public relations employees a number of months in the past about delicate phrases. Hastings wrote that a number of folks advised Friedland how inappropriate and hurtful his use of the phrase was.

Hastings says Friedland, who’s white, later repeated the phrase with human sources employees making an attempt to deal with the unique incident. Hastings wrote the second incident “confirmed a deep lack of understanding.”
