#CBC: “Rose McGowan cancels visit to Toronto on Brave book tour due to ‘unforeseen circumstances'”
Rose McGowan has cancelled the rest of her book tour for her new memoir Brave.
A publicist for HarperCollins Canada Ltd., announced the news on Friday.
McGowan was scheduled to visit Toronto on Monday to promote the book as well as her new E! Network documentary series Citizen Rose.
HarperCollins said that’s now been “cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances” and that McGowan “has cancelled the duration of her book tour.”
The memoir from the artist, activist and former actress, who is 44, details her sexual assault allegation against film producer Harvey Weinstein.
Weinstein is accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct.
Weinstein issued a statement Wednesday that quoted an alleged email from McGowan’s former manager, saying that the actress had spoken of a consensual encounter with him.
McGowan also issued a statement Wednesday saying that Weinstein’s remarks were part of an ongoing effort to “smear” her.
Later Wednesday, McGowan appeared for a book reading at a Barnes & Noble book store in Manhattan. According to the entertainment trade magazine Variety, she read passages and responded to a pre-submitted audience question before she was confronted by a woman in the crowd.
Referring to a July 2017 episode of celebrity RuPaul’s podcast, What’s The Tee?, the woman called out McGowan for saying transgender women are different from other women.
“Trans women are dying and you said that we, as trans women, are not like regular women. We get raped more often. We go through domestic violence more often. There was a trans woman killed here a few blocks [away]. I have been followed home —”
McGowan interrupted to respond.
“Hold on. So am I. We are the same. My point was, we are the same.”
The interaction turned into a shouting match, and the woman was removed. McGowan erupted, shouting into the microphone for several minutes, sometimes using expletives, while the crowd cheered and sometimes chanted “We love you Rose.”
After reading more passages, McGowan left for another appearance on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Planted by Weinstein?
On Thursday, according to USA Today, McGowan talked with journalist Ronan Farrow at a New York community centre which organizes cultural events, about the altercation. She told Farrow she believed the audience member had been planted in the crowd by Weinstein.
In a statement Friday, a representative for Weinstein told USA Today the accusation was not true.
“No one is monitoring her whereabouts. It’s unfortunate that she is choosing to marginalize a community that is fighting to have their voice heard by claiming that the individual was a ‘plant’ of my client. It’s simply untrue and disrespectful to the Transgender community,” it said.
On Twitter, McGowan called out her publicists, assistants, managers and “every person sitting in their chairs” for not helping her during the verbal conflict.
And everyone from my publicists, t assistants, managers and every person sitting in their chairs frozen by their weakness, a weakness called COMPLICITY. The truth is you all failed me. Again. And again. And again.
