(WOODSTOCK, Vermont) Woodstock, Vermont, is a lovely hamlet with a bourgeois charm, typical of New England. The newly renovated 506 on the River Inn offers a comfortable environment for those who want to enjoy the farms, museums, lakes and shops in the area.

Becoming a large inn with 40 rooms and 5 suites, the 506 was occupied by 5 cottages on the banks of the river Ottauquechee. The white houses gave their civic addresses to beige buildings that were clean, but without much architectural interest.

Inside, the decoration is warm, with its wooden furniture, leather upholstered chairs and large chesterfield sofas. One stays in neutral and soothing tones. The welcome is very friendly, not at all pompous. We feel that the staff knows its area well and is proud of it.

If you are traveling with your family, the hotel is particularly suitable for children, with a toddler's playroom and another for the bigger ones with pool table, table football, video games and ball machines. Adults can run on treadmills or book in the library.

But it is the large pool with hot tub and sauna that steal the show. These are facilities that can save many family holidays!

The rooms are spacious and, for the most part, equipped with a kitchenette. With their gray carpets, dark wood furniture, mirrors and light fixtures that merge into the decor, they are more comfortable than coquettish. Although clean and simple, they have this small beige and impersonal side that would be associated more with the big chains.

You will want to spend some time in the communal areas of the inn, like the vast dining room. In the morning, you will be served a country breakfast with breads, cereals, local dairy products, fresh fruit, etc. This dining room is also the restaurant and bar of the 506. We did not eat there, but the food offers a full menu of appetizers and plentiful main dishes. Again, children are considered (capricious!) With a short menu for them.

One hour south of Montpelier, Woodstock is surrounded by great attractions. Four minutes walk away you find the very Instagramable but unaffordable Farmhouse Pottery (a large bowl to mix at $ 325 US!). Four minutes by car you can stroll the village. In the hamlet of Barnard, 20 minutes north by car, there is the exceptional La Garagista vineyard (by appointment), the esoteric Fable Farm and its Thursday evening market, Feast and Field.

The site of the 506 also offers a host of activities to do in the surroundings. Why not start with a lazy lazy afternoon on the grass, on the terrace or in the pool listening to the soothing melody of the river?

Our verdict

Price: from US $ 199 per night, sometimes less on weekdays at the last minute, but sometimes also much more on weekends.

Location: We do not go to the village of Woodstock on foot. But by car, it's four minutes. Drive another 10 minutes and you will be in Queechee, where are amongst others the renowned glassmaker Simon Pearce and his luminous restaurant.

We like: the large communal spaces and the swimming pool.

We like less: the fact that it is more beautiful on photo! The decoration which, in fact, does a little toc, does not justify the high prices (that said, they are everywhere, in Woodstock).

A place to recommend for: families and people who like the comfort of large chains.
